Do Today’s Teens Really Not Know What An STI Is?

In a recent study from youth website and health charity – The Mix, it was reported that a fifth of young people don’t understand what sexually transmitted diseases are.

Public health England also found that one in ten sexually active young people had never used a condom.

With The Mix survey also reporting that 1 third of young people had never had an STI test and 20% reported being too embarrassed was the reason why.

A sexually transmitted infection (STI) is an infection that can be passed from person to person when having sex. You can get an STI by having vaginal sex, anal sex, or oral sex. You do not need to have lots of sexual partners to get an STI. Both men and women can get and pass on STIs. There are several different types of STI.
